stop drinking soda

Rather than talking exclusively about how drinking soda can cause harm to your body (including everything from depleting mineral levels, changing your metabolism and increasing the risk of diabetes), we wanted to go over a few of the benefits that come when you stop drinking soda.

1. Weight Loss

Giving up soda goes a long way to help people lose weight. This is due, in part, to the fact that soda (and especially diet soda) can cause more cravings.  Isabel Smith of Isabel Smith Nutrition had this to say about artificial sweeteners, in particular: “Artificial sweeteners affect our sense of satiety.” She also added, “Our bodies have evolutionarily developed to expect a large amount of calories when we take in something exceedingly sweet, and those artificial sweeteners are from 400 times to 8,000 times sweeter than sugar.” That results in a couple things happening.

“The muscles in your stomach relax so you can take in food, and hormones are released. With artificial sweeteners, your body says, ‘Wait a minute, you told me you were going to give me all this high-calorie food.’ It can actually send some people searching for more food, out of lack of satisfaction.” By cutting these artificial sweeteners out of your diet, it can decrease the need for snacking more and leave you feeling more satisfied when you do eat.

2. More Energy

It’s not a shocker that soda isn’t the best for us, energy-wise. While it’s true that it can give a temporary sugary-high, our bodies also crash after a while. This leads to a lack of productivity and focus. Smith said “There is way more energy for our bodies in real food than in processed foods.” By avoiding processed foods and leaning towards healthier options, your body will thank you.

3. Healthier Body

In general, cutting soda out of your diet will make you healthier. To start, you will experience a much stronger immune system. Our gut bacteria, which helps with everything from blood sugar control to how our immune system works and how it responds to infection, is affected negatively by artificial sweeteners. Cutting soda out of our diet will mean getting sick less. It will also ensure our bodies have stronger bones and teeth!

This is just a small list of benefits stemming from choosing other drinks over soda. A full list of benefits would also include positive effects on everything in your body from your brain and heart, all the way to your bladder and even reproductive organs!
