A recent study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Network) and shared by The International Chiropractors Association (ICA). It is yet another example of the significant results patients—especially those prone to chronic lower back pain—can experience through chiropractic care.
Chiropractic Care To Treat Low Back Pain
A recent study compared military members with low back pain who implemented chiropractic care and those who didn’t. It was found that military members who utilized chiropractic care for low back pain had statistically better outcomes than those who didn’t utilize chiropractic treatment as part of their usual medical care.
In fact, 62.6% of those who underwent chiropractic care (plus usual medical care) saw significant improvements in their back-related function. This is compared to the 46.6% that only received usual medical care.
Additionally, 57.5% of patients who used both medical and chiropractic care saw improvement in pain compared to the 32.5% who solely received traditional medical care.
U.S. Army Colonel, author, and leading expert in integrative health research design Wayne Jonas, MD, said,
“This is a rigorous, large study of chiropractic care for back pain in the military. As a pragmatic study it looked at the benefit for back pain from adding chiropractic care to what service members currently get. Bottom line is that adding chiropractic care helps improve back pain more than usual care alone. In this time of high opioid use for pain, we desperately need more non-drug approaches to chronic pain. Chiropractic should become a standard part of these options for our military.”
Beth Clay, ICA Director of Government Relations, shared how this research can globally benefit the military population. It could also help reduce reliance on opiods.
“We already know members of the military have higher rates of back pain than the public; this study’s outcomes support ICA’s position that our nation’s military members deserve full and unfettered access to chiropractic care.”
