Slowing down as we age is a pretty normal thing. It can happen due to aches and pains, fear of falling, or weight problems. As exercising gets a little bit harder, it’s that much easier to not put up the effort. Don’t put it off!

Among other things, exercising can boost your energy, increase your metabolic rate, and help with mental health as well.

Facts about aging and fitness:
  • Over age 25, the average person gains ~0.7 to 1 lb per year (27-30 lbs over 30 years)
  • 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day will greatly lower your risk for Cardiovascular Disease, which is the leading killer in the United States.
  • Exercising will also lower your risk for high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and some cancers.

Okay, okay you understand the benefits but you just don’t enjoy working out. Remember that you really only need to enjoy moderate activity for 30 minutes a day to enjoy nearly all the benefits of exercising as you age. It’s not a science! Just think about activities that you already enjoy or things that you’ve always wanted to try.

You don’t have to push yourself to run a half marathon to be physically active and enjoy all those health benefits!

Some Ideas:
  • Walking. (Try skipping the golf cart at the course.)
  • Yoga. This can help you breathe and increase your balance!
  • Water aerobics
  • Pick up a new sport like Pickleball

Live longer and healthier by doing the little things. Small diets and a little bit of exercise will go a long way! Remember to see a doctor for regular checkups.
