If you suffer from headaches or migraines, you know how much this can impact your daily life—and you’ve probably tried just about everything to find relief.

What if we told you there’s a non-invasive, safe treatment you could try that eases headache pain for many of our patients? Let’s talk about this treatment option, and how it could improve your quality of life.

What Is SphenoCath Treatment?

Each of us has a collection of nerve cells under the tissue that lines the back of the nose. These nerves are called sphenopalatine ganglion (or SPG for short). These nerves control face and head pain and can trigger, or intensify headache pain.

An SPG block procedure applies a local anesthetic to this bundle of nerves and temporarily blocks headache-nerve impulses that cause headaches.

During the procedure, the patient lays down in a comfortable reclined position. The doctor then inserts a very small catheter—called the SphenoCath—into the nasal passage. It delivers the anesthetic block to the SPG without the use of needles or invasive medicine.

The entire procedure typically only takes 15 minutes. It takes about 3 minutes for the anesthetic administration and 8 minutes of rest after the SPG block.

How Effective Is Sphenocath Treatment For Headache Sufferers?

The SphenoCath is a gentle, quick, in-office procedure and usually comfortable and painless. This is a low-risk treatment option for patients of all ages—including pregnant women.

The SPG block procedure is highly effective and has a success rate of 94%. Most patients only need 3-4 treatments, and over time, experience long-lasting headache relief. Additionally, Medicare and most insurance companies cover the cost of this procedure so it’s typically very affordable!

One of the most significant benefits of the SPG block is that it can replace the need for migraine narcotics.
